Golf courses, particularly those owned by former President Donald Trump, have consistently posed significant challenges for Secret Service personnel responsible for ensuring the safety of the grounds during the president's visits, as reported by sources knowledgeable about the situation.

Following the first assassination attempt on Trump during the summer, security measures were intensified; however, these enhancements failed to prevent another assailant from approaching within 500 yards of the former president, armed with an AK-47 equipped with a telescopic sight.

Both incidents stemmed from a common issue: the difficulty in establishing a secure perimeter around the former president.

Golf courses inherently present unique security challenges. They often represent the largest outdoor spaces accessible to a president, and their layout—frequently adjacent to public roads and featuring natural elements like trees and hills—can provide cover for potential threats, complicating the agency's efforts to maintain security.

During a press conference on Sunday, officials revealed that a suspected shooter concealed himself in a thicket along the edge of Trump’s golf course until a Secret Service agent noticed the barrel of his firearm.

Similar to previous presidents, Trump’s presence at a golf course does not necessitate the closure of the club to the public or the surrounding roads.

Typically, teams of agents dressed in golf attire accompany the former president in golf carts, securing the area in the minutes leading up to his arrival.

Trump, like his predecessors, enjoys the opportunity to drive his own golf cart—one of the few instances where a sitting or former president can operate a vehicle. Sources indicate that while the president's golf cart bears a presidential seal, it lacks any specialized protective features.

At times, security personnel utilize metal detecting wands to screen players and other visitors prior to their approaching the former president. Although there have been previous attempts to limit access to Trump at his clubs, he enjoys engaging with club members.

Trump International Golf Club, located in West Palm Beach, is adjacent to three busy thoroughfares: Kirk Road, Summit Boulevard, and Congress Avenue. The Palm Beach International Airport is also in close proximity.

During his presidency, Trump was often visible from across Kirk Road while golfing. However, media representatives were prohibited from standing on the sidewalks adjacent to the golf course during his games.

Following his departure from office, some of these restrictions were eased, allowing the public to view Trump clearly from the sidewalks along Summit Boulevard and Congress Avenue.

In a briefing on Sunday, the sheriff of Palm Beach County addressed certain security issues.

“At his current status, he is no longer the sitting president. Had he been, we would have secured the entire golf course. However, since he is not, security measures are confined to areas deemed feasible by the Secret Service,” Sheriff Ric Bradshaw stated.

“I would anticipate that the next time Trump visits the golf course, there will likely be an increased presence around the perimeter,” Bradshaw further noted.

During Barack Obama’s presidency, his most common golfing destination was the course at Joint Base Andrews, which, due to its military installation status, had restricted access both to the course and its surrounding areas.
